Common Bathroom Exhaust Fan Problems and Solutions
This is a labelled diagram of a bathroom exhaust fan with a stuck open damper. The damper is a small flap that opens and closes to control airflow.
There are several problems that can arise when a bathroom exhaust fan damper is stuck open:
- Condensation: When warm, moist air from the bathroom comes into contact with the cold duct in the attic, condensation can form. This condensation can drip from the fan or around the fan and stain the ceiling.
- Water stains: As mentioned above, condensation dripping from the fan or around the fan can cause water stains on the ceiling.
The following are possible causes of a stuck open damper:
- Lack of insulation: An uninsulated duct in the attic will be cold, which can cause condensation to form more easily. The image shows that insulation around the duct can help to keep the duct warmer and reduce condensation.
- Tight bends in the ductwork: Tight bends in the ductwork can restrict airflow and put stress on the damper, which can cause it to stick open.
