Weight Calculation of Rectangular Steel Bars

Rectangular steel bar, which has a grainy texture and radius level corners, is a very robust and adaptable building material.

Carbon rectangular bars are one of the most often used industrial and construction materials in the world due to its durability, adaptability, and affordability. Rectangular steel bars are used in the production of construction equipment, steel construction projects, buildings, ships, steel structures, power plants, agricultural and chemical machinery, glass curtains, automobile chassis, airport, and more.

Solid and hollow rectangular steel bars

The material of rectangular steel bars is usually mild steel with yield strength of 250 MPa.

Rectangular steel bars exist in the form of solid bars and hollow bars.

In this topic, we look at the method for calculation of weight of rectangular steel bars: both the solid and hollow steel bars.

To calculate the weight of steel, we need to things:

The unit weight

The volume of steel

The unit weight of a material is:

*the weight per unit volume of a material*.

The unit weight of steel (we also call it density) is approximately:

**78.5 kN/m3**

**7850 kg/m3**

**490 lbs/ft3**

**13231 lbs/yd3**

The volume equals:

**Area * length**

Since the bar is rectangular, the area = length of rectangle * width of rectangle

Steel weight calculation is done by with the help of steel weight formula.

The general formula is:

**Weight of rectangular bar = Unit Weight (density) x Volume**

Unit weight of steel = **7850 kg/m3**

Calculate weight of a rectangular steel bar with side A = 50 mm and side B = 100 mm and the length is 1 meter:

Side A length = 50 mm

Side A length = 50 mm / 1000 = 0.05 m (converting from mm to m)

Side B length = 100 mm

Side B length = 100 mm / 1000 = 0.1 m (converting from mm to m)

Cross-sectional area = Side A * Side B = 0.05 * 0.1 = 0.005 m2

**Weight of rectangular bar = Unit Weight of steel x Volume**

Unit Weight of steel = 7850 kg/m3

The volume equals:

**Area * length**

Weight of rectangular bar = 7850 * 0.005 * 1 m =

**W = 39.25 kg/m**

This means that each 1 m of this rectangular bar has a weight of 39.25 kg.

The weight will be equal to the weight/m * total length

If the length is 3.5 m,

The weight of the bar = 39.25 * 3.5 = **137.375** kg

There are several different sizes of rectangular hollow sections. Their minimum lateral dimension is approximately 26 mm x 13 mm and their maximum lateral dimension is approximately 400 mm x 200 mm. The thickness of rectangular hollow sections also varies widely, with a minimum thickness of 0.8 mm and a maximum thickness of 12 mm. The length of rectangular hollow sections also varies widely, ranging from 4 meters to 12 meters.

What differs in this case is the volume; specifically the area will be changed.

**Area of the rectangular hollow section = whole area of rectangle – area of the empty area**

**Area = H * B – h * b**

Calculate weight of a rectangular steel bar with side A = 50 mm and side B = 100 mm; the thickness of the tube is 10 mm and the length is 1 meter:

Side A length = 50 mm

Side A length = 50 mm / 1000 = 0.05 m (converting from mm to m)

Side B length = 100 mm

Side B length = 100 mm / 1000 = 0.1 m (converting from mm to m)

Thickness = 10 mm = 0.01 m

**Cross-sectional area = Side A * Side B – (Side A – 2*thickness) * (Side B – 2*thickness)**

Cross-sectional area = 0.05 * 0.1 – (0.05 – 0.02) * (0.1 – 0.02) = 0.0026 m2

**Weight of rectangular rebar = Unit Weight of steel x Volume**

Weight of rectangular bar = 7850 * 0.0026 * 1 m = 20.41 kg/m
