Important Components of a Car Clutch System
This is a diagram of the components of a clutch system used in a car with a manual transmission. The clutch system allows the driver to disengage the engine from the transmission in order to change gears or bring the car to a stop without shutting off the engine.
Here are the parts :
- Release Bearing: This pushes against the pressure plate to disengage the clutch disc from the flywheel.
- Clutch Cover: This houses the pressure plate and diaphragm spring .
- Pressure Plate: This clamps the clutch disc flywheel together.
- Flywheel: This is a large metal wheel that connects the engine to the clutch.
- Pilot/Spigot Bearing: This supports the end of the input shaft from the transmission and helps to align the engine and transmission.
- Diaphragm Spring: This applies pressure to the pressure plate to hold the clutch disc against the flywheel.
- Clutch Disc: This is the part that connects the engine to the transmission. It has a friction lining on both sides that grip the flywheel and the pressure plate.
